Florence Nightingale would take care of the farmers that worked at her fathers estate when they were sick, and she just loved being able to do that. Florence was only 12 at the time. She was so good at nursing that she had saved the life of a dog that belonged to an old Sheperd. The dog had broken his leg somehow and Florence took such great care of him that she wound up saving his life, at such a young age.
In 1837 when Florence Nightingale was 16, she claimed that she heard a calling from God. In that calling God was speaking to her and was calling her to his service. Nightingale was sure that God was trying to tell her that she was suppose to become a nurse and take care of the sick and the poor. Since Florence came from a wealthy family she was not expected to work, and nursing was not a respectable profession at this time so she was definetely not allowed to become a nurse. Florence didn't care because she was not going to let her parents stop her from following her dreams. So Florence went to school to learn all that she needed to learn about nursing and she trained how to take care of the sick there too.
In 1854, Florence and 38 other nurses went to Crimea to take care of the wounded soldiers because England had entered the Crimean War. The military hospitals there were very dirty. So Florence made sanitary improvements and because of that the death rate dropped from 40% to 2%. Florence was always kind to the soldiers and when she made her rounds at night she would walk around carrying a lamp, so that it could light her way, and so she was known as "The Lady with the Lamp"
Florence Nightingale invented the polar diagram. She invented it to keep track of the deaths at the hospital. Florence would make improvements in the hospitals and sometimes even buy her own vegtables to feed the patients. She was keeping them healthy and keeping the hospital clean. The polar diagram showed the deaths at the hospital and how they died. From the first month that she has been working there to the last month there was a whole lot less people that were dying because of the improvements that she made in the hospital.

We could find polar diagrams when people are talking about the death rate of a place. I haven't really seen a polar diagram before until I read about Florence Nightingale but I know that in the future i would probably be seeing one expecially if I'm in social studies and I'm learning about the deaths in a place.
